What is
teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural shade of the enamel. The active agent penetrates the tooth and breaks down the pigments built up over time from coffee, tea, wine, smoking, or simply from the tooth's natural ageing.

Unlike a cleaning, which removes deposits from the surface, whitening acts on the colour of the tooth itself. That's why it's done after a cleaning, on clean teeth, so the result comes out even.

Whitening at the practice is done in a single appointment, under the dentist's supervision. Beforehand we check whether you're a suitable case and agree a realistic expectation together. Here's what happens, step by step.

We check the state of your teeth and gums, look at whether you have fillings or crowns on the visible teeth, and record the shade we're starting from. We tell you realistically what result you can expect in your case.

Whitening is done on clean teeth. If needed, we carry out a cleaning first, so the agent works evenly and the result isn't patchy because of tartar or deposits.

Isolating the gums and lips

Before applying anything, we protect the gums and soft tissues with a special barrier. This is the step that separates professional whitening from products used at home, without any protection.

Applying and activating the gel

We apply the whitening gel to the teeth and activate it, in one or more rounds depending on the case. You sit back and relax; if any sensitivity comes up, tell us and we'll adjust.

Checking the result and aftercare advice

    Whitening lightens your natural shade, it doesn't replace it. Enamel starting from a lighter base goes further than one that's naturally dark. That's why we agree a realistic result for your case at the consultation.

    Stains from coffee, tea or smoking usually respond well. Discolouration coming from inside the tooth, after root canal treatment or from certain medications, behaves differently and calls for another approach.
